PRESENTATION

Pizza pinwheels are a fun twist on the classic flavors from Campania, Italy. Honestly, they show off just how much you can do with some pizza dough and a few solid ingredients. These pizza pinwheels start with the same kind of dough you’d use for a regular pie, but instead of shaping it round, you roll it up with stuff like provola, tomato and sliced olives tucked inside. Pretty simple. That way, each bite is a bit of everything—gooey cheese, zesty sauce, and a little salty pop from the olives. And look, folks in Campania are all about keeping things straightforward and letting the real taste of Italian ingredients shine. Thing is, this easy pizza pinwheels recipe keeps things pretty simple, but you can get creative with the filling, just like people do back in Italy. Some might swap out the provola for mozzarella or even toss in a few herbs for extra fragrant bites. You could also add some spicy salami for a little kick, making these pinwheels even more exciting.

Whether it's game nights, casual get-togethers, or even a quick snack before dinner—these homemade pizza pinwheels fit right in. Instead of the usual pizza slices, you get little spirals that are super easy to grab, and they work as awesome pizza pinwheel appetizers or even a main snack. Pretty much. The edges come out crispy and golden while the inside stays soft and moist, making each bite a mix of tender bread and melty cheese. In Campania, people love using whatever’s on hand, so feel free to try different toppings—think of this as one of those family-friendly pizza recipes where everyone picks what they like. Bringing these to a party pretty much guarantees they’ll disappear fast, and they totally fit with the Italian vibe of relaxed, tasty food that gets people together. Plus, since you can make a bunch at once, this simple pizza pinwheels idea is handy for feeding a crowd or just keeping snack time interesting. For real. Once you bite into that warm, cheesy swirl, you get why folks keep coming back to this fun take on pizza. Whether you're a fan of traditional flavors or love experimenting with new combinations, these pinwheels are sure to satisfy. And the sauce? Seriously good.

Preparation

How to prepare Pizza Swirls

To prepare the pizza swirls, start with the dough. Sift the flour into a large bowl, add the sugar 2 and the yeast 3.

Mix to combine the ingredients 4. Gradually pour in the water 5, kneading directly in the bowl 6.

As soon as you've incorporated all the water and obtained a homogeneous dough, add the salt 7 and knead with your hands until absorbed 8. Now transfer the dough to a work surface and add the oil 9.

Continue kneading until the dough becomes smooth and homogeneous 10. Transfer it to a bowl 11 and cover with plastic wrap 12.

Let it rest in a place protected from drafts until it doubles in size 13. With these amounts of yeast, it will take about two hours. When the dough has doubled, transfer the peeled tomatoes to a bowl, season with salt, oil, and oregano; then mash them with a fork 14. Then transfer the dough to a floured surface 15.

Dust it with a little flour and roll it out with a rolling pin 17. You should obtain a rectangle 10.5 inches wide, 15.75 inches long, and 0.16 inches thick. Now spread the tomato almost all over the surface of the rectangle, leaving a 0.4-inch border 18.

Place the slices of provolone 19 and the pitted sliced olives 20 on top. Gently roll up from the longer side 21.

Make sure to keep the seam of the roll facing down 22. Now, using a knife, cut 11 swirls about 1 inch wide 23. Gently transfer them onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper and lightly dusted with flour 34.

Let them rise for another 30 minutes 25. At this point, bake in a preheated convection oven at 392°F, on the middle shelf for 15 minutes. When they are nicely golden, remove from the oven and serve your swirls 27.

Storage

The pizza swirls can be stored for 2 days in a food bag. Alternatively, they can be frozen after baking, once cooled.
