Ham and cheese sandwich rolls

PRESENTATION

Ham and cheese roll-ups are the kind of snack you just can’t resist. Really. They show up everywhere—from birthday parties to those chill late-night hangouts. And the sauce? You know, the crispy outside with the gooey center gets everyone grabbing seconds. Seriously good. You start with sliced sandwich bread—nothing fancy—then lay down a bit of cooked ham and a slice of Emmentaler cheese. It's a nutty twist from the usual mozzarella or provolone, and honestly, it stands out. Once everything’s tucked inside and the bread’s rolled up tight, the whole thing gets a quick breading and fry, turning it into a golden and melty bite that’s just right for sharing with friends. That tender, cheesy center after the crunch? Can’t go wrong.

When you're planning a casual get-together or something like New Year’s Eve, these ham and cheese roll-ups are a smart choice. No stress. They’re easy to prep ahead, making them one of those easy ham and cheese appetizers that people actually finish—not just pick at. Pretty much. The Emmentaler adds a slightly sweet touch you don’t usually get in typical European snacks, so each bite feels special, even if the process is super simple. Folks might call these ham and cheese wraps or even compare them to other quick party snacks, but the breaded and fried part—really really sets them apart—from things like cold ham and cheese tortilla roll-ups. Kids love the moist cheese pull in every bite, and adults appreciate that little kick of salt from the ham. And look, they go with all kinds of dips—ketchup, mustard, or something tangy and creamy. Whether you're enjoying them on a sunny afternoon or a chilly winter evening, this ham and cheese roll-up recipe is a great choice. Whenever you need a crowd-pleaser that's easy to eat with your hands and doesn’t take a ton of effort, these roll-ups are a pretty good bet. For sure.

How to prepare Ham and cheese sandwich rolls

To prepare the sandwich bread, ham, and cheese rolls, flatten the slices of bread with a rolling pin 1. Cut the cheese into slices slightly smaller than the bread and about 0.4 inches thick 2. Fill the bread with a slice of cooked ham 3.

Place the cheese on top 4 and place a sheet of plastic wrap underneath, roll the slice of bread 5, trying to tighten the roll using the plastic wrap 6.

Seal the rolls on both sides by tightening the plastic wrap 7 and refrigerate for 1 hour. At this point, pour the egg, milk 8, and black pepper into a baking dish. Whisk to combine 9.

Dip each roll in the milk and egg mixture 10 and then in the breadcrumbs 11. Heat a little seed oil in a pan and place the rolls 12.

Cook them for about 10 minutes on medium-high heat, turning them on each side 13. Transfer them to absorbent paper to dry the excess oil 14 and enjoy the hot sandwich bread, ham, and cheese rolls 15

Storage

The sandwich bread, ham, and cheese rolls can be stored in the refrigerator for a couple of days. We do not recommend freezing them.

Tip

We recommend turning the rolls often in the pan to ensure even cooking and achieve the gooey effect! For the filling, you can also opt for a pizzaiola version with 3.5 oz of mozzarella, 5 tablespoons of tomato sauce, and a few fresh basil leaves.
