PRESENTATION

Valentine's cookies bring a sweet Italian touch to love day. These heart-shaped delights, crafted from classic Italian frolla dough, have a soft, crumbly texture. Really good stuff. You layer one cookie over another, and the top one has a cutout to reveal a glossy jam filling—adds a splash of color.

In Italy, these cookies are often enjoyed at breakfast or as a romantic snack to share with someone special. Using two heart-shaped cutters of different sizes gives the cookies their charming layered look. Pretty simple, right? And look, depending on where you are, Italians might swap the jam for chocolate or orange marmalade—really, it’s about personalizing these homemade Valentine's cookies.

Throughout Italy, these Valentine's Day cookie recipes are loved for their tender, almost melt-in-your-mouth center, with a crispy frolla edge. They turn an ordinary day into something festive. How to prepare Valentine's Day Cookies

Take the butter out of the refrigerator an hour before use, cut it into pieces, and let it soften at room temperature.
Place the flour on a work surface, and in the center, add the butter and all the other ingredients, including the vanilla bean seeds 1; work the mixture very well until you obtain a smooth and homogeneous dough 2. Wrap it in plastic wrap and let it rest for at least half an hour in a cool place 3.

With a rolling pin, roll out a sheet no thicker than 1/5 inch 4, and with the heart-shaped cutter, cut an even number of shapes, remembering that you will need two to make one cookie. At this point, on half of the hearts obtained, make incisions with a cutter, also heart-shaped but smaller (5-6); then place all the hearts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and bake them at 356°F for about 15-20 minutes.

The cookies should not darken, but only barely color; when they are cooked and still warm, place some strawberry jam on the uncut shape 7, and place the cut-out shape on top 8. The cookies thus obtained should be dusted with powdered sugar 9, and... happy Valentine's Day!

Tip

To make these cookies, you can use different shapes as long as, given the occasion, the heart shape appears either externally or internally on the cookie.
You can thus use round cutters with scalloped or plain edges, that you will imprint internally with a heart, or you can use heart-shaped cutters that you will imprint internally with your initials or those of your partner.

Curiosity

If you want some ideas for making colorful and fancy Valentine's cookies, or simply covered with powdered sugar, you can take inspiration from the pictures here. If desired, you can coat them with a glaze made from boiling water and powdered sugar, which should be thick enough and applied while the cookies are still warm. When preparing the glaze, you should add the boiling water to the powdered sugar one teaspoon at a time and stir constantly until you get a thick and smooth mixture. You can color the glaze with powdered or liquid food coloring and decorate the cookies with sprinkles, candies, or colored sugar; but be careful! The glaze dries quickly, so you must have all the decorations on hand to apply them immediately; once the glaze dries, the decorations will no longer stick.
